MEET MICHAEL HANSEN

Michael grew up surrounded by forest and beach in Sonderborg, Denmark. Since 1998 he has lead the creative workshop at the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen, where he has conducted creative activities and learning. In addition to that he has more than 45 years of experience with the arts and art experiences. As an autodidact artist he works with everything from paintings to sculptures and installations.

WHAT NATURE MEANS TO ME?

"Since childhood, nature has always been a haven and source of inspiration for the unfolding of my artistic activities. I my adolescence I have now worked with the arts and art experiences for 45 years. Although different, I have always compared the art experience with a walk through the forest or on the beach. Here I find the space to set my mind free and reflect. I am not a 1-to-1 drawer of nature. I find motifs in nature that I can use as a focal point for abstractions. But of course there is always an element of the original motif in my work. This way of approaching the drawing of nature is explained by my desire to add some sort of action to the picture. I allow conflict in the composition. For example a battle between figures. It happens that I sometimes “settle” with the naturalistic, but only in rare cases."
